노무현 대통령은 2007년 6월 8일 원광대학교에서 명예정치학박사 학위를 수여받은 뒤 '민주주의 똑바로 하자'란 제목으로 특강을 했다. 노 대통령은 "한국 정치에서 진보적 민주주의는 정말 중요하다"고 강조하며 "우리나라는 정치 후진국, 언론 후진국, 복지 후진국, 세 가지 측면에서의 후진국에서 벗어나면 선진국으로 진입할 것"이라고 말했다.
